Biodegradability Testing

Restoring the Natural Balance

Biodegradation Assessment

Annually, our planet grapples with approximately 300 million tonnes of plastic waste, equating to the weight of the entire human population. Since the mid-20th century, we’ve produced over 8 billion tonnes of non-renewable plastics. Alarmingly, 60% of it ends up polluting our ecosystems. The longevity of this waste in the environment—ranging from centuries in oceans to land—has profound ecological implications.

Avecom stands at the forefront of scientific innovation and environmental sustainability.

We are committed to support the research and development of next-generation polymers tailored for the plastics and chemical sectors. Avecom has more than 25 years of expertise in optimizing microbial degradation of wastes in soil and water.

ASTM D5988-18 - Standard Test Method for Determining Aerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials in Soil

This test method covers determination under laboratory conditions of the degree and rate of aerobic biodegradation of plastic materials, including formulation additives, in contact with soil.

ASTM D5988-18 is designed to measure the biodegradability of plastic materials relative to a reference material in an aerobic environment.

This ASTM test method is equivalent to ISO 17556.

OECD 301F - Ready Biodegradability in an Aerobic Aqueous Medium (Manometric Respirometry)

The OECD 301F test permits the screening of chemicals for ready biodegradability in an aerobic aqueous medium.

The OECD 301F test quickly assesses if a material is readily broken down in water using oxygen.

This closed bottle test measures how much oxygen gets used up during biodegradation over 28 days.

Experience the Power of Lab-Scale Tests

Lab-scale tests offer numerous advantages, revolutionizing the way we understand and address pollution challenges. By conducting these tests, we can swiftly identify degradation patterns of pollutants across various remediation techniques, all within a relatively short timeframe. This enables us to select the most appropriate and tailored remediation strategy for your specific needs.

Moreover, we optimize crucial process parameters, maximizing efficiency and effectiveness. The benefits are significant—lowering overall costs and increasing certainty in achieving the desired final outcome.
